AC's 1982 RM250 Restoration Project

Intro

My favorite RM of all time.. the 1982 RM250Z. Some people considered it one of the finest MX bikes ever made, I certainly do. It’s in the Dirt Bike magazine’s ”Hall of Fame”. I’ve thought about restoring one for a few years now and finally did it. I just purchased one off Ebay, its in fair condition. I’ll post pics once it gets in my garage and then the journey begins. Does the wife have any idea the countless hours to be burned in the man cave, late night, twisting wrenches, downin beers, & skinnin knuckles? Nope, but then again neither do I guess. I plan on this project taking at least a year based on others, plus add 2 small kids to the equation. Let see how it goes, should be fun.

  2. Great site! The pictures you are putting in the Tear Down area of your blog are much better than the few that I took of my bikes at that stage. Thanks for the link on your Staging Area. I will be checking back soon, as I just got an 83 RM250!

  5. Really good! Got everything painted, but I had to have a small fix on the frame. So I’ll be getting that back this week. I have the motor painted and it’s about ready to go out to get rebuilt. Got all new gaskets, and every single case screw NOS. Going to look brand new. This is my second RM250Z restore so it’s going pretty smooth, so many lessons learned first time around. I’ll be posting some photos of the restore progress soon on my site: http://www.youngerdryas.com/1982_suzuki_rm250/

  7. Hey Armondo, i’m just about to get back into the rebuild after the summer. It’s mostly a winter project for me. I’ve gotten a set of 1983 CR250 forks rebuilt and they’ll be going on the bike.

Congrats on your purchase.. I take it you’ve gotten the piston out and are now looking at a cylinder thats in bad shape? You’ll need to see if its still within spec, if it is you can bring it somewhere to be honed / bored and purchase and oversize new piston. If not you’ll need to find a new cylinder. I can’t recommend these guys more.. http://www.onthepiperacing.com They did my forks and will be doing my motor – they know their stuff and specialize in vintage MX. Give ‘em a shout – great guys

  8. I bought an 82′ RM250 in 1983. It was almost new condition. It was the first bike I raced on. It was fast and simple before power valves. I sold it in 1986. I regret that. I have never ridden a bike with better rear suspension. My 2006 CRF450R with custom shock revalve and spring does not work as good as the stock 82′ full floater. I remember watching Barnet win supercross races on that bike. One of the best ever.

  9. Got a new web address http://www.fullfloater.com and I have tons of new stuff on the site. More reproduction decals all the time. I will also doing custom number plates for ALL years of RM125 & RM250 now too! Are you starting up work again on your bike? I’m just about done tearing down a 1981 RM125X for restore. Looking for a 84-85 RM125 front end for it. I’m putting a set of Simons UDX on the ‘82 RM250 I just restored.

  10. Hey Marc, i’ve seen your site – looks great! I also have a link to it in my links section. I’ve been acquiring a few parts and just found a powdercoater for the frame. I’ll have some updates by christmas. Its going a bit slow for me since i’ve also decided to start graduate school as of last september – i’m really asking for trouble
